People often ask why victims of county lines continue to transport and deliver drugs and don’t just run away.
To answer this question, it is helpful to see the similarity between domestic violence and modern slavery.
For example, we understand that a victim of domestic violence might not feel able to leave their situation. They may feel trapped, coerced, manipulated, threatened, fearful for their life or their familyโs life and without options. In the same way, there can be many reasons why a victim of human trafficking or county lines cannot escape. Just because someone doesnโt run away when given the chance, doesnโt mean they are not a victim. There are so many complexities surrounding coercive control, emotional manipulation and threats.
โWhat can you do? Spend some time familiarising yourself with local organisations and services so that you can signpost support if someone is looking for debt services, womenโs groups, rape crisis support or other frontline services.

๐บ Both Netflix and the BBC are currently portraying modern slavery plotlines in some of their most popular programmes โ have you spotted them?
๐ชบ In Eastenders, Okie and Ravi are manipulating and โcuckooingโ Kojo. โCuckooingโ is when a criminal organisation takes over the home of a vulnerable person, using it as a base of operations for drug dealing, trafficking or storing illegal goods.
๐๐ผIt is encouraging to see a soap opera like Eastenders using its platform to educate and inform.
โ๏ธIn Netflixโs The Thursday Murder Club there is a modern slavery and human trafficking plot line. We canโt say much without giving it away but do watch the film and take the opportunity to talk about the issue with others!

Modern slavery is a huge problem in the UK today.
It can take many different forms, but usually includes tricking, threatening or physically forcing people either into work for little or no pay, committing crimes or sexually exploiting them – all to profit the trafficker.
The Salvation Army provides specialist support to protect and care for all adult survivors of modern slavery in England and Wales through a government contract.
Anti-Slavery Day is on Saturday 18 October. Keep an eye on our socials over the coming weeks, and join us in raising awareness of modern slavery and the needs of survivors โค๏ธ
[Image description: “End modern slavery for good” is in large writing with the word ‘good’ emphasised. “#AntiSlaveryDay 18th October 2025” appears against a black backdrop at the bottom of the image, with a white barcode.]

This week is #NationalRetreatWeek.
Many of us lead busy lives and we all need rest, reflection and replenishing. To intentionally put time aside for prayer and to be with God. This is why we go on retreat.

A prayer for start of the new Connexional Year.
O Christ of the morning,
You who sang the stars into being,
Sing again into our hearts today.
As a new year unfolds,
we walk into the next chapter of your story,
the next line of your song.
May the Spirit stir our memory,
reminding us who we are
your people, your melody,
each life a note in your unfolding hymn.
Guide us in courage,
hold us in love,
send us with hope.
In the name of the One who goes before us,
beside us, and sings within us
Christ our companion,
Amen.
Written by Matthew Forsyth, Vice-President of the Methodist Conference 2025โ26.

As we begin Creationtide, here is a prayer written by Faye Edwardes, Church Buildings Support Officer at Diocese of Truro.
Creator God,
You formed the heavens and the earth, the seas and all that dwell within them.
We give thanks for the beauty and wonder of your creation, for birdsong, for trees, for flowers, and for rivers that flow with life.
Forgive us, Lord, for the ways we have wounded the earth. Renew in us a spirit of selflessness and care. Help us to walk gently, choose wisely, and love boldly – all of your creatures and our fragile planet.
May we join hands in hope, that your creation will flourish and your glory be revealed in every living thing.
Amen.

With the United Church of Christ in Japan, we pray for peace ๐
We, as children of God and children of peace, continue to pray for the coming of God’s kingdom.
We pray that the domination by force of strong governments and peoples over weak ones will come to an end.
We pray for the breaking of the chains of hatred between governments and peoples.
We pray that every weak and desperate individual be granted courage and the power to live.
And we pray for an end, throughout all the earth, of the nuclear threat.
Amen.

We pray:
Creator God,
you breathed life into this world and us all. We long for an end to suffering in Gaza and pray for freedom for all your creation.
Give to those in authority wisdom to act decisively for the good of all, so that we may see a just and peaceful resolution in Gaza, the West Bank and Israel
In the name of the Prince of Peace,
Amen.

It is terrifying, and heart-breaking, to hear the news of the plane crash in Ahmedabad. Carrying 242 people, including many UK nationals, the plane crashed into a residential area.
My prayers are with all the victims who were on the plane, those on the ground, and all those who are going through the unimaginable suffering of losing loved ones so unexpectedly.
Iโm praying for everyone affected, and hoping beyond hope that more survivors will be found.
