Online Seminar: Monday 18th December 2023, 6pm to 7:30pm.

This event will bring together leaders involved in welcoming and supporting refugees and asylum seekers across Europe, with an expert panel bringing a range of perspectives about the specific UK context and exploring how we can harness safe and legal routes to ensure that people can receive the protection they need.

Organised by the Diocese of Canterbury’s Refugee Programmes Team, in friendship with A World of Neighbours and the Church of England’s National Home Affairs Team, we reflect with The Right Reverend Paul Butler, Bishop of Durham, on the implications and opportunities offered by the Illegal Migration Act for those in need of international protection.

The seminar will highlight the active role that the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) faith communities and civil society can play within the Safe and Legal routes framework in the UK. It affords a unique platform to look afresh at the UK’s asylum and migration context with European colleagues from the AWoN network and colleagues working in France.

Practitioners from AWoN and colleagues in France will draw on migration policies from across Europe with a focus on Safe and Legal routes and illustrate impact working with those in need of international protection in the Netherlands, Hungary, and Poland, whilst RESET will share their expertise on community sponsorship in the UK. There will be a time for questions and discussion, during which members of the audience will be invited to share their thoughts and reflections.

The panel includes:

  • The Right Reverend Paul Butler, Bishop of Durham;
  • Rikko Voorberg, Director at A World of Neighbours, Netherlands;
  • Pastor Marta Bolba, The Lutheran Church, Hungary;
  • Anna Alboth, Journalist and Peace Nobel Prize Nominee, Poland;
  • Bradon Muilenburg, Calais Refugee Project Officer – Church of Europe, France,
  • A representative from Reset UK.
