Truro Choral Society
Truro Symphony Orchestra
with choirs from Truro School and Truro High School
Conductor: Martin Palmer
Orchestra Leader: Philip Montgomery-Smith
To celebrate their 60th-anniversary season, Truro Choral Society has chosen to celebrate coronations in 2023, the year of the crowning of King Charles III.
This concert begins with Parry’s thrilling “I Was Glad”, usually the opening choral work in British coronation ceremonies. The orchestra then performs Vaughan Williams’ lovely Oboe Concerto where the soloist is ex-Truro School pupil, now professional performer, Ellie Sullivan. Imogen Dowse, a current Truro School student, is the soloist in Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Elgar’s “Give Unto the Lord” ends the first half. Mozart’s fine Coronation Mass is the climax of our concert; its nickname was probably given because of its popularity in Vienna at imperial coronations.
