Local churchgoers in the parishes around Falmouth and Penryn have produced a new guide to a series of country walks around the historic churches in the area.

Their booklet, the Falmouth Way, will guide readers to twelve local churches, as well as Glasney College Field, site of the ancient Glasney College, founded in 1265.

It is intended to encourage walkers to enjoy the wonderful churches the area has to offer, as well as to appreciate both the beauty and the fragility of the natural environment.

It also offers suggestions for eco-friendly actions, as well as tips on some of the animal and plant life to look out for on the way.

The booklet will be available from participating churches after the launch event. Copies are free, but donations in support of the project will be gratefully received.

This initiative is part of the Diocese of Truro’s increasing emphasis on the role the church must play in caring for all of creation in a time of environmental crisis.

The Falmouth Way will be launched at a special event at Higher Wayfield, next to Budock Church, at 12.30pm on Saturday 8th April, led by the Right Reverend Hugh Nelson, Bishop of St Germans.

“I am so pleased that these churches are setting up the Falmouth Way,” says Bishop Hugh. “God’s creation is so beautiful and getting closer to it can often draw us closer to Him. I hope that many people walk this new Way, and discover God’s presence as they do so.”

“We’re so grateful to Bishop Hugh for his support,” said Falmouth Way organiser Lucy Thompson. “Our initial idea was that this would be like a pilgrimage. It’s like a pilgrimage not to just one holy site but to all our churches, a pilgrimage which also celebrates the wonderful natural environment with which in southwest Cornwall we have been so blessed – and which we must all play our part in preserving for future generations.”

The Falmouth Way initiative is organised by the Creation Care team for the Deanery of Carnmarth South.
