This single live session is part of a series celebrating the 400th birthday of George Fox, in which key speakers assess Fox’s legacy from a variety of positions. In this session, Cherice Bock will consider George Fox from an ecological perspective.
George Fox is regarded as the principal leader of the early Quaker movement during the 17th century. He sometimes wrote movingly about caring for other animals and the rest of the physical creation, but he also seems to have encouraged Quaker involvement in trade and business which led to the exploitation of both people and the natural world. What is his ecological legacy?
Cherice Bock is a recorded Quaker minister. She sees environmental concerns as this generation’s most pressing social justice issue. Her academic work focuses on nonviolent theology, Quakerism, contextual theologies, feminism, environmental justice, ecospirituality, and ecotheology.
The session is part of the celebrations of Fox 400.
