COP27: finding solutions to the climate crisis in nature : 15 Nov, ONLINE

Explore the risks and opportunities of looking for climate solutions in nature with A Rocha UK’s CEO, Andy Atkins and guest

The biodiversity and climate crises are inextricably linked; climate change is damaging nature and nature will be critical to combatting the climate crisis. Policy makers are increasingly looking for ‘nature-based solutions’ to the climate crisis. For example, by investing in nature and restoring coastal mangrove forests to protect communities from coastal flooding, or restoring valuable habitats such as peatlands to capture carbon.

Both of these interventions are great for wildlife too, win-wins for climate and nature. However, there are risks in these ‘nature based solutions’, which the world must avoid. This is the issue that will be at the heart of the ‘biodiversity day’ at COP27, when nature will be on the agenda of the UN climate change conference.

Join us online on Tuesday 15th November 19:00-20:00 to hear from our Chief Executive Andy Atkins on our analysis of the conference so far, and to dig a little deeper into the risks and opportunities of looking for climate solutions in nature. We’ll also be joined by special guests TBC.

What is COP27?

COP stands for Conference of the Parties (to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change), and the meeting happening in November will be the 27th time this group has convened, hence ‘COP27’.

It’s where countries negotiate the global response to the climate crisis and look at the progress made against agreed targets. COP27 will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt 6 – 18 November 2022.

What are Nature Based Solutions?

Nature-based Solutions (Nbs) are approaches that work with and enhance nature on land and sea, providing benefits for both human wellbeing and biodiversity, to address societal challenges including climate change. Nature-based Solutions to climate change can both avoid greenhouse gas emissions and enhance carbon sinks on land and in the sea as well as build resilience and aid adaptation to climate change for both nature and people.
