CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE: A CHRISTIAN DILEMMA. Speaker Dr Carmody Grey
ONLINE 10th October 2022 at 7.00pm

The breakdown of the climate is destroying our world. It will destroy countless species, the food and water supplies we rely on, the places we love, our communities and our futures. It will lead to war, migration, starvation and misery for billions: the biggest disaster in human history. In response, thousands of people, including Christians, are taking to the streets in acts of mass civil disobedience, calling for urgent action.

In this online event we explore the crucial question: are Christians ever justified in resorting to to acts of non-violent civil disobedience as a means of protest? In an imperfect world, where failures of governance are inevitable, at what point do such failures become acts of moral transgression serious enough to break the social contact between citizens and their Government.

Dr Carmody Grey  is Assistant Professor at the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, University of Durham. Since giving the Hook Lecture in Leeds in 2021, she has become acclaimed as a deeply thoughtful and insightful commentator on the ethical issues of our day and particularly in relation to faith and the climate crisis.

This event will include the opportunity to find out about taking direct action with Just Stop Oil, who – consistent with statements by the International Energy Agency that there can be no more new investments in fossil fuel supply beyond that already committed to in 2021 – are calling on Government to announce an immediate halt to licensing of new fossil fuel exploration and production projects.
