Angela is Coordinator of the network of volunteer amphibian and reptile groups who aim to conserve our UK-native amphibians and reptiles. The presentation will introduce our widespread amphibians and reptiles, and discuss how we can best nurture and conserve them in burial grounds through sympathetic management, working in partnership with land managers, maintenance contractors and local communities. As an environmental campaigner, Chris Baines has spent 50 years promoting the idea of working WITH nature, and using our gardens, burial grounds, parks and other small green spaces to begin restoring wildlife habitats. In this illustrated talk Chris will take that message, and show how it can now be rolled out across the wider landscape, from remote rural countryside, through urban Britain and on into our coastal waters. In this talk, we’ll explore historic and contemporary mourning traditions, the symbolism behind the carvings on headstones and the folklore of the plants and trees that you might find in burial grounds across Britain. This talk will mostly focus on the Victorian burial ground, drawing on Claire’s knowledge of garden cemeteries but will include earlier examples of different types of burial grounds from the medieval period onwards.
