Jonny Baker has been encouraging and advocating for pioneer mission for more than a decade through the Church Mission Society Pioneer Leadership training course for lay and ordained people in Oxford. He has written a number of books including ‘Imagining Mission’, ‘The Pioneer Gift’, and ‘Pioneering Spirituality’ with Cathy Ross, and is now on tour talking through his latest book ‘Pioneer Practice’ which is a summary of wisdom collected from the contemporary pioneer world in the UK and put together in a readable magazine-style book. He’ll be exploring a couple of the book’s main points – ‘See’ possibility and ‘Build’ something new – in his conversational visual style.
Jonny will be joined by Gavin Mart who sings, tells stories and produces creative multimedia about pioneering communities he has visited and set up over the years, encapsulating experiences in song, poetry and spoken word.
Come along, be encouraged, inspired and challenged to see what God is doing and join in.
The afternoon will be a workshop environment with a mix of teaching, conversation, music, and storytelling. The evening will a chance for meeting other pioneers informally over food and conversation with music and poetry.
There are 4 booking options, please ensure you make the right selection:
- 4pm-8.30pm – attendance at the whole event (£15, includes a pasty)
- 4pm-6pm – attendance at the afternoon teaching session only (£5)
- 6.30pm-8.30pm – attendance at the evening session only (£10 with pasty or £5 without) If you require a vegetarian pasty, please specify this in the dietary requirements field.

GETsidetracked is a partnership and platform and Pioneer Practice is our first creative project. That in itself is a fun story in that Jonny ran a series of webinars on creativity in January 2021. One of the themes explored was how getting knocked off your regular routine is a provocation that often leads to new ideas. In other words one way to be creative is to deliberately get sidetracked. That all led to this being born which we hope can be a platform for further ways we ourselves get sidetracked! Watch this space.
