Supporting refugees in England: small grants available

Church Urban Fund is here to support local churches as they continue to help refugees arriving in England.

Small grants for churches supporting refugees arriving from Ukraine and Afghanistan

Church Urban Fund has partnered with the Benefact Trust to launch our Refugee Support Small Grants Programme. Together, we are supporting Christian projects that help refugees arriving in England from Ukraine and Afghanistan. We offer small grants between £500 and £5,000.

Registered Christian charities, and members of Churches Together In England are all welcome to apply. All applicants must be able to demonstrate a clear Christian foundation or ethos. We do not provide small grants directly to individuals.

There are many ways that churches can take part in supporting refugees. Befriending and welcome groups. Co-hosting a lunch club or providing information about the UK finance system. Running a foodbank or toddler group. Every action makes a difference and everyone has a role to play.

This programme provides small grants for projects or activities that support refugees who have arrived in England from Ukraine or Afghanistan. This can include:

  • Providing basic needs, such as safe accomodation, clothing, food, mobile phones, baby care items, and hygiene items.
  • Supporting refugees as they settled into life in England: UK life courses, befriending, English language classes, baby and toddler groups, welcome parties and drop-in sessions.
  • Providing safe spaces and networks of support: volunteer expenses, renting church halls, training and essential DBS checks.

Together, we can provide meaningful and practical support to help refugees in your local context, and foster lasting networks that help your communities flourish.

Before submitting an application, we recommend you read the Guidance document carefully. It includes useful information about eligibility, criteria, and resources to support your application.

If you have further questions about the programme contact our friendly team on 0330 053 1954 or grants@cuf.org.uk. We would love to hear from you.
