Remembering Srebrenica’s aim is to commemorate the 1990s Bosnian genocide in which just under 100,000 Muslims were killed, two million people were displaced, and up to 50,000 women raped. It was the result of ethnic and religious hatred. 2025 is the 30th anniversary of the mass murder of 8,372 men and boys in one town: Srebrenica. The United Nations has described it as “the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War.”

Remembering Srebrenica’s mission is to remember yesterday and act today. To remember and pay tribute both to those who died and those who live with the loss of their loved ones to genocide. It also recommits to combatting the hate and racism that continue to kill people overseas and which too often blight the lives of people here in the UK.

There will be hundreds of memorial events and activities taking place across the UK this summer ahead of the international commemorations taking place in Bosnia and Herzegovina itself on 11 July – Srebrenica Memorial Day.
Faith and interfaith communities are warmly invited to join this year’s commemorations. Details of the main June/July events in Scotland, Wales, NI and the English regions will be available soon.
Faith communities may consider:
- Holding a special service on Sunday 6th July. There are template programmes containing prayers, stories and readings that can easily be adapted to the service.
- Posting the statement of commemoration on your website or social media to commemorate Srebrenica Memorial week.
- Connecting with other faith groups or different communities to organise an interfaith event (virtual or physical), for reflection or prayers using the Interfaith resources.
