In the square outside Notre Dame Cathedral, on the 4th of August, representatives of major religions came together, alongside International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach to promote the ideals of peace and brotherhood.

“In the true Olympic spirit, I invite you all, whatever your faith, to join the athletes in this call for peace,” Thomas Bach stated as he opened the gathering.

Holding the ceremony at Notre Dame served as a tribute to the first-ever interfaith meeting organised by modern Olympics founder, Pierre de Coubertin, a hundred years ago in Paris.

As reported by Orthodox Times, volunteers from the Olympic Village’s multi-faith centre, along with prominent figures such as Tony Estanguet, President of the Paris 2024 Organising Committee, and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, echoed Bach’s message. “Share this call for peace in all your communities,” they urged. “Let the billions of sports fans and faith followers unite.”

Chief Rabbi of France, Haïm Korsia, expressed a hope for enduring unity: “May we live collectively and sustainably in brotherhood like today. Let us rediscover the shared laughter that reflects the happiness of souls and hearts.”

Philippe Marsset, Auxiliary Bishop of Paris, emphasised the connection between body and soul: “When the soul remains closely connected to the body, it undoubtedly allows the best expression of the self.”

Najat Benali, President of the Paris Mosques, praised the unique nature of the gathering: “These moments of fraternity, the exchanges with athletes, staff, and among ourselves across different faiths, are truly extraordinary.”

Benali also shared her optimism for the future: “I haven’t followed the news for a week. I don’t want to be overwhelmed by bad news because we are experiencing something truly wonderful. I really hope this spirit will endure.”

Lama Jigme Thrinle Gyatso, co-chair of the Buddhist Association of France, highlighted the inspirational role of sports: “When athletes and their spectators act as true competitors rather than adversaries, they inspire all of humanity.”
