Everyone is welcome to the inaugural thinkfaith academic day conference, taking place at the ARK Cafe at White River Community Church on Tuesday 15th October 2024.
Keynote Speaker
Revd Dr Benjamin Aldous (Keynote Speaker) | Slowing down in soil and sea: Reflections on theology of place and contextual mission in the South West.
Ben is the principal officer for mission and evangelism at Churches Together in England the national ecumenical instrument. Ben is particularly interested in mission, ecumenism and intercultural theology. He spent 16 years in Cambodia and South Africa firstly as a church planter and latterly as a Parish priest. He helps host and curate conversations amongst denominational church leaders with the portfolio of mission from across CTE’s 52 member churches. He is the author of Intercultural Church: Shared Learning from New Communities (Grove 2020), The God Who Walks Slowly (SCM 2022) and ‘Lived’ Mission in 21st Century Britain (SCM 2024). He is a research fellow at the Queens Foundation in Birmingham. In 2025 he is taking sabbatical leave in at Åbo Akademi in Turku, Finland to work on a new book entitled How Can We Sing in a Strange Land: Mission, Ecumenism and Future Church. He is married to Sharon with 4 children who live together by the sea in Devon.
Bruce Murray | Connecting human and spiritual development.
Bruce has worked in education, church leadership, mental health mentoring, developmental coaching, and spiritual direction. He also writes, and works in a mentoring or supportive role with church leaders and others. He and his wife Lois run a small self-contained retreat house where they live in Townshend (near Hayle), and offer various themed retreats, quiet days, prayer, and conversation, to individuals and groups. Lois is also a musician working in performance, teaching, and leading choirs. They have a large family and a small dog, grow vegetables and make ice cream.
Current interests include exploring the implications of connections between human and spiritual development for Christian discipleship, community, and mission; the development of networked microchurches and mobile mentoring in rural communities; and fresh approaches to the training and formation of Christians for mission and leadership.
Abby Clayton | Unknowing and knowing; mysticism and mission
Abby is a pioneer missionary based in Mevagissey. She is partway through a PhD exploring themes of beauty, mission, biblical theology, and epistemology. Abby is married to Charlie, and they have three young boys.
James Henley | Performing the Body of Christ: Ecclesial practices and the formation of disciples.
James is a Baptist Minister, currently serving alongside his wife, Julia, in Budleigh Salterton, Devon. He also works for the South West Baptist Association as the Learning Community Co-ordinator. Before coming to Devon in 2014, James & Julia were mission workers in Peru with BMS World Mission. James is completing the final stages of a PhD exploring Christian ethics, and in particular the place of the Eucharist in forming the Church’s response to global poverty.
Rev’d Susie Templeton | Lessons from the Shoreline for a Church in Transition
Susie is a Pioneer Minister in Truro Diocese. Growing up in Portsmouth, and having lived in various parts of South East Asia, she trained for ministry in Oxford (which is very far from the sea), and is delighted to now be serving the parishes of the Lizard peninsula (which is surrounded by the sea on three sides). From the Royal Navy to scuba diving via a love for Marine Biology, the oceans have been a consistent influence since childhood and she completed her MA with a dissertation looking at the sea as a place of spiritual encounter. These days she shares this passion with a small black dog who loves the beach as much as she does.
Doors will open at 9am for a 9.30am start, and the day will end around 4.30pm. Parking info is available on the church website here, and the train station is a ten minute walk away.
