Christmas message from the World Day of Prayer

Make Room for Love
Thou didst leave Thy throne and Thy kingly crown,
   When Thou camest to earth for me;
But in Bethlehem’s home was there found no room
   For Thy holy nativity: Oh, come to my heart, Lord Jesus!
There is room in my heart for Thee;
Oh, come to my heart, Lord Jesus, come,
   There is room in my heart for Thee.  (E.S. Elliot (1864)

Growing up as a young girl in the Anglican Church, I enjoyed this song so much during the season of Advent because it speaks to me and touches my heart. It portrays the love of our Lord Jesus Christ. The song resurrects in my soul the Savior’s love for humankind – how he chose to leave his Father’s throne in heaven and descend to earth, all to give us the gift of redemption and transformation into a new life. This love must truly humble us as we strive to show the same to people around us. This spirit of making room in our hearts takes on a special meaning as we prepare to pray with our sisters from the Cook Islands during the 2025 World Day of Prayer, we’re reminded that making room in our hearts extends beyond our immediate community. When we join in prayer with women from different parts of the world, we participate in God’s boundless love that crosses all borders and unites us as one family in Christ. Christmas is a season of love, and we must do everything possible to make room for love. Like the innkeeper who offered shelter to Mary and Joseph, we too can open our hearts and homes to our neighbors. The story of Jesus’ birth in Luke 2:1-14 paints a powerful picture of humility – the King of Kings arriving not in a palace, but as a normal baby born to poor parents in a simple manger. As we celebrate this season, may this divine example inspire us to embrace both love and humility, making room in our hearts for Christ and for one another.
