A group of dedicated volunteers in Illogan, have been recognised for their outstanding care of the local churchyard ensuring it remains a haven for both wildlife and the community.

David and Jean Glasson, long-time caretakers of the five-acre St Illogan parish churchyard, received a Highly Commended award in the Green category at the BBC Radio Cornwall Make a Difference Awards. The award celebrates 18 years of tireless work by the couple and their small team of volunteers who meet every Thursday morning to tend to the space.

The churchyard, believed to be the second largest in Cornwall, is part of the Cornwall Living Churchyards project and regularly hosts local schoolchildren for wildlife workshops, scavenger hunts, tree planting, and more.

Helen Jones, the churchโ€™s Creation Care Champion, shared her delight: โ€œWe use the churchyard to bring nature alive for local primary schools. Itโ€™s just a lovely green space.โ€

From bird boxes to peaceful benches, the space offers a quiet retreat for both people and wildlife. And the recognition doesnโ€™t stop at the BBC โ€“ last year, the churchyard also received a certificate from the Royal Horticultural Society for its contribution to village life and conservation.

David summed it up simply: โ€œWeโ€™re delighted. And weโ€™re always looking for more volunteers!โ€

If you’re local to Illogan and fancy spending a couple of hours in nature, you’re welcome to join the team โ€“ just turn up on a Thursday morning between 10am and 12pm.
