Vacancies: Mission to Seafarers volunteers, Falmouth

Rare opportunities exist to join the Volunteering Team at The Mission to Seafarers inside Falmouth Docks.

These opportunities will ideally suit those who have been to sea, are interested in the sea or have family who have served at sea. However, anyone with an interest in meeting people from all over the world will enjoy these roles.

This is an opportunity to meet and engage with seafarers of all nationalities, all ranks and all religions, and those of no religion.

You will greet seafarers visiting The Flying Angel Centre, offer them a warm welcome and engage in conversation or simply listen to some extraordinary stories of life at sea. You will act as host, making teas and coffees, offering soft drinks, and assisting them to contact home using the free wi-fi service.

You will assist with currency exchange and selling Mission souvenirs.

Training in all aspects of the work of The Mission to Seafarers will be given.

The Mission has a Centre which incorporates a large comfortable lounge area, a kitchen, a large garden, a Summerhouse and a chapel, all inside the secure dockyard area.

As part of the Mission team, you will be given the opportunity to join the Emergency Team – which assembles in the event of a ship casualty, when The Flying Angel Centre would act as a Reception Centre.

Rota duties are available Monday – Friday from 1930 – 2200. During the Cruise Call Season there are also daytime rota opportunities. Free parking is available on-site.

There is also the opportunity to train as a Welfare Ship Visitor once established as a Rota Volunteer and to Hospital visit when seafarers have been airlifted or landed by ship when ill or injured.

Seafarers bring us over 90% of our daily needs yet are out of sight and often out of mind. This is an opportunity to show we care for those who risk their lives in the most dangerous of professions and who are away from their loved ones for long periods, often in severe weather conditions and at the risk of piracy and shipwreck.

Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, is President of The Mission to Seafarers, a worldwide organisation with a Head Office in London.
