Pope Leo XIV has officially declared St John Henry Newman as the 38th Doctor of the Catholic Church. This announcement came after a meeting with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, who confirmed Newman’s recognition for his significant theological contributions.

Newman, a 19th-century theologian and convert from Anglicanism, was canonized in 2019. He is only the third English saint to receive this title, following St Bede and St Anselm.
The title “Doctor of the Church” honours saints whose writings and teachings have exceptional importance for the faith. Cardinal Vincent Nichols described this recognition as a “delightful” tribute to Newman’s lasting influence.
